Different Types of Shootings in Phoenix

Many Different Things Contribute to A Phoenix Shooting

Road rage is something that people joke about, but you never know what could happen. Of course, I’ve even joked about having “road rage” but after this latest news article I won’t be joking around about it any more.

According to the Department of Public Safety, they have made an arrest that deals with a road rage shooting. The shooting happened around the Loop 101 on a Saturday.

Thirty-six year old, Christopher Hoffman had admitted to his involvement of the shooting that happened on a Saturday morning near Bell Road.

The Department of Public Safety “DPS” says that witnesses and citizens were able to help them locate Hoffman. Hoffman was booked into jail for a drive by shooting, aggravated assault, discharging a firearm in city limits as well as being in possession of a dangerous drug.

The Department of Public Safety said in a media conference that they do not think that this drive by shooting was connect to the ongoing freeway shootings investigation.

Apartment Complex Shooting in Phoenix

Another type of shooting is at a residential home or apartment complex’s. Home shootings are sadly pretty common. The Phoenix Police said that they were able to identify a woman who had been shot and sadly died in Phoenix on a Friday.

According to the reports, thirty-one year old, Latangla Lawrence had suffered from several gunshot wounds inside of an apartment complex which was located near the I-17 and Thomas Road. The police have reported that the thirty-one year old woman had been shot in the face.

There were witnesses to the shooting, and according to the reports by them, Lawrence was seen leaving the apartment after shots had been fired. She then fell to the ground.

A man was found not far from the scene with a gunshot wound, he was then taken to the hospital where he remains for now. The police have said that there were also two children found inside of the apartment. They children have been taken to the Department of Child Safety to keep them safe.

The shooting is still under investigation at this time.

Could have been a domestic fight? Domestic disputes are known to get a little crazy sometimes, but would it really get so bad to shoot each other? Plus, the children in there…I doubt any kind of parent would shoot at each other in front of the kids. Maybe a drug deal gone bad? Who knows? The police are working hard to get to the bottom of it.

Public Shooting Turns into a Homicide

Another type of shooting is sadly a public place shooting. These are pretty common days. Shootings often turn into homicides, because let’s face it, if you’re planning on shooting someone chances are you’re not shooting at them to tickle them. You’re wanting to hurt them badly, or probably kill them.

A search started for a man who was wanted for a 2014 shooting in a San Diego homicide. The man was later arrested in Phoenix just a couple weeks ago. The police was given a tip about the suspect, and luckily it lead the authorities to the Valley where the found him.

Twenty-six year old Neil Downey as well as another man had allegedly shot a victim outside of a hookah lounge in November of 2014 in San Diego. The first suspect was found a little quicker, in April of this year. However, Downey remained at large and on the run until a Thursday.

Downey is no angel, the brutal man has an extensive history of violence on children as well as police. This, coming from the U.S. Marshals, who are pretty good with their intel.

Since August the United States Marshals have been looking into every tip they’ve recieved about Downey. They got many saying that Downey could be hiding in Phoenix or the Mesa area. They were able to finally track him down as he was leaving a home in the area of 21st and Turney. Must have been some pretty good tips.

David Gonzales, U.S. Marshal for District of Arizona’s Statement:

The level of interagency cooperation exhibited during this investigation was second to none. This collaborative effort resulted in the capture of a violent fugitive and made the Valley a safer place.

Downey is now in jail and is awaiting for extradition to San Diego. He’s being held at the Maricopa County 4th Avenue Jail. He’s probably not in a hurry to be heading back to San Diego though.

Homicide Cases All Throughout Phoenix

Fatal Phoenix Shootings

Crime is growing extremely fast. Instead of getting better and growing together, the country keeps getting more and more divided. While some hoped that President Trump’s presidential victory would bring the nation together for better American jobs, less crime, and less illegals it’s also brought a huge segregation against the people of the world.

In Phoenix, a one man crime spree caused havoc on Sunday night. There were two shootings, which ended in death. There was two other shootings, a pair of carjackings, a car chase as well as a self inflicted fatal gunshot wound.

James Holmes who is a Phoenix Police officer said that the Monday investigators had not came up with a motive and that the shooting seemed to be random violence. It occurred at a Motel 6 near Interstate 17  and Northern Avenue.

The suspect was identified as twenty-eight year old, Daterryn McBride. He had to be hospitalized for a gunshot wound and he later died. According to the reports, he had a criminal history.

McBride had shot and killed forty-four year old, Brian Harris as well as forty-four year old, Robert Sykes. He shot them around 10:30 p.m.  There was a clerk that was also shot and is in critical condition.

Phoenix Police Search for Suspect

McBride fled the scene on foot, but not before he shot two people who were just sitting in a pickup truck in a parking lot. The two people were able to drive to a nearby convenience store at 27th and Northern Avenues and were able to get a hold of the police. The pair was treated at the scene.

According to the report, McBride ran into an apartment complex near 27th and Northern avenues. During his flee, he took a man hostage and stole his car as the man’s wife and infant watched. McBride then fled down I-17.

Holmes Statement:

That man got in the car, allowing himself to be kidnapped and wasn’t shot. I can’t imagine the terror he felt.

The car then broke down and McBride left it and then carjacked another victim. He then crashed that car near 16th Street and University Drive in Phoenix.

Police say that McBride then got out of the car and ran into a nearby field. Once in the field, he shot himself.

Deadly Phoenix Shootings

Phoenix Shootings End Deadly

Now crime continues to grow in Phoenix and other border areas. People are scare they might be deported. The ones that aren’t scared are running illegal deals or scams across the border.

According to the Phoenix police, a twenty-two year old man is now dead. A woman is in pretty critical condition after a shooting in West Phoenix.

Police were able to detain two people from inside of a home where the shooting happened. It happened near 55th and Clarendon avenues, according to Phoenix Police spokesman, Officer James Holmes. It so sad you can’t even be home anymore without being involved in a shooting.

Police are unsure of what the man and woman might have been involved in the shooting. Holmes said that the homicide investigation is now ongoing.

Police had received a call around 4:30 in the morning about an assault at the home. There was a gunfire that broke out just as officers were heading to the scene. The officers got to the scene and found a twenty-two year old man and a woman in her twenties. They were both suffering from gunshot wounds. The man died at the scene of the incident and the woman was taken to a local hospital for being in critical condition.

Phoenix Shooting Ends Deadly for Husband and Wife

According to Officer Holmes, the man and woman was actually husband and wife.

The investigators say that the woman had been at the house when a fight started. She called her husband for him to pick her up. However, a second fight started outside of the home. When the husband arrived with two children, ages three and five there were gunshots fired. The husband and wife were both hit.

The children have been removed from the area and are both luckily safe.

Hopefully officers can find the cause of this incident and get the shooting rates down. I know they work hard to keep people safe, but Phoenix residents are scared. More and more people are arming themselves. Whether it be for self defense or to wreak havoc.

Thankfully the kids weren’t injured in this horrible incident. It’s one thing for fights to happen, but when innocent kids get involved it’s a whole other situation.

Arizona Child Cruelty Cases

Phoenix Police Detective Faces Child Abuse Charges

When you think of a police officer, you mainly think of hero. You never dream of them being involved in child abuse. However that isn’t always the case.  According to the reports a former Phoenix Police detective and his wife are now going to face charges for their connection with the death of a man’s young daughter.

The little girl, seven year old, Sanna Cunningham sadly died in Februrary 2017 however Germayn and Lis Cunningham weren’t indicted on the child abuse charges until several months later. On January 2nd they were finally arraigned on those charges.

In Court, thirty-seven year old Germayne, pleaded not guilty to a count of First Degree Murder as well as 11 counts of Felony Child Abuse. Lisa had a hard time breathing so couldn’t make the arraignment due to being taken to the local hospital. The arraignment was postponed by a judge.

Prosecutors asked that Cunningham be taken into custody and held on a $1 million bond.

Prosecutor Joshua Clark’s Statement:

There has been information circulated that he cashed out his retirement, meaning he has the means to flee or leave the state.

The judge had other plans though, Cunningham could remain a free man but must wear a tracking monitor.

The Goodyear Police continued to investigate the case and found that Germayne and stepmother Lisa had abused and neglected the child since at least June 2016. The Court documents showed that they allegedly forced the young girl to sleep outside and restrained her with zip ties. They even locked her in the garage and laundry room.

According to The Department of Child Safety, there were multiple visits made to the family’s home over the last several months however there wasn’t ever enough evidence to justify taking Sanna from the home.

However, the Cunninghams are being indicted by a grand jury on 10 counts of child abuse and one first degree murder charge.

Germanyne Cunningham was with the Phoenix Police Department for 12 years before he resigned in September. It’s not known if the Goodyear Police investigation into his daughter’s death had anything to do with why he left the force.

Couple Arrested for Child Abuse Case

How can anyone willingly hurt a anyone let alone an innocent child? As a parent this is one of the most unthinkable things.

Now a Lake Havasu City man has been arrested and charged with child abuse after a two year old girl had to be hospitalized due to life threatening injuries.

Police and fire crews had to respond to a report of a female child who wasn’t breathing. This happened in the 2800 block of Appletree Drive. The little girl was immediately transported to the local hospital. Officials said that based on the circumstances and at first observations that the detectives with the Lake Havasu City Police Department Criminal Investigations Unit started an investigation.

Police say that the girl’s father, twenty-one year old, Andrew J. Lamorie was charged with child abuse per domestic violence, aggravated assault per domestic violence, child neglect, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Sounds like he’ll be spending some time in jail.

The poor child remains in critical condition and is struggling with his or her life threatening injuries.

Cover Up Abuse

The daycare owner at the center of a child abuse cover-up at his Phoenix facility was sentenced in court on Tuesday.

Ruben Sandoval served two days in jail prior to sentencing and will not get any additional jail time if he completes a year of probation and pays a $950 fine. He is also required to complete 130 hours of community service.

Sandoval owns Brighter Angels Learning Center near Central Avenue and Baseline Road, as well as several other locations around the state.

Man Convicted of Child Abuse

He was convicted of covering up child abuse after a 21-month-old boy was smacked in the face with a broomstick by an employee back in February. He was also accused of seeing surveillance video of the multiple strikes. But, Sandoval allegedly told the employee to not talk to police and drafted a note to the victim’s mother saying the boy tripped and fell instead.

Three employees, including Sandoval were convicted of abuse or covering up abuse.

However, the Arizona Department of Health Services decided the facility was able to stay open. This also comes after ABC15 uncovered more than 35 additional citations that were handed down to the daycare since the abuse occurred.

Sandoval is also still able to run all the facilities in the state, despite his conviction in Phoenix City Court.

Toddler Who Was Abused Has Now Passed Away

According to court documents, the doctors at a Valley hospital found that a little four year old girl suffered severe brain and spinal injuries and signs of sexual abuse.

Sadly the little girl died just a few days later.

Police said that twenty-four year old, Major Aaron Murry admitted to striking the little girl after she spilled some milk. At the time of the initial hearing the Judge said that the little girl may or may not survive her horrible injuries.

Initial reports say that Murry was arrested on Thursday on suspicion of child abuse.

Babysitter Child Abuse

Murry was trusted to watch over the little girl while her mother was at work. However that didn’t work out so well for the poor child. Murry admitted to becoming angry at the girl and then hitting her when she spilled milk near his Xbox video game system. The hit caused her to fall and hit her head.

The court documents say that Murry went to lay the girl down for a nap and when he later checked on her she was unresponsive. He told the police he tried to revive her.

According to the Doctor reports the girl had bruising on her ear, forehead and face and other injuries to her little spine.

Spousal Abuse Cases

Native American Spousal Abuse

Native American Spousal Abuse sadly isn’t uncommon. Kayla White was only twelve years old when her life changed forever. On January 2, 2009 her mother was killed by her father. This incident made her a victim of domestic violence.

Kayla’s Statement:

That’s when I heard my uncle say, ‘I don’t know how you’re going to tell Kayla your mom didn’t make it. That was the moment I found out my mother had passed on.

How tragic would that be? Now Kayla is twenty-two years old and a Navajo Nation member. When she was growing up she never realized there were so many signs of domestic violence right in front of her at her own home. Her older siblings told her that her father had always been mentally and verbally abusive towards their mother.

One in four women and one in seven men have experienced domestic violence in their lifetime. According to the ACESDV Native American women experience domestic violence at rates of 50% higher than the national average.

Kayla’s Statement:

Even just looking at my mom’s life insurance, the way she had things set up for my siblings and I, she knew something was going to happen to her.

Kayla said that her mother had even tried to file for divorce before but her father wouldn’t let her mother leave.

Spouse Domestic Violence

Native American reservations are said to have high rates of domestic violence. People think that that is mainly due to the lack of awareness.

Caroline Felicity Atone grew up in Southern Arizona as a member of the Tohono O’odham Nation.

Antone’s Statement:

I didn’t even know there was such a thing as domestic violence.

Antone said that she left the reservation when she was 14 years old due to the fact that she was abused when she was at home. She eventually cam back and is working as a counselor there now.

It  took a while for her to return home, she went to treatment and began to cope with her abuse in a healthy way.

Antone’s Statement:

Since our tribal members don’t know about counseling in general, it’s very difficult to get them into counseling. The shame, the hurt, the destruction of their souls, some of them, they feel it’s their fault.

Hopefully the exposure gains some awareness in the Native American culture and helps lower the domestic abuse numbers.

Woman Kills Her Husband During Spouse Abuse Case

There’s some pretty morbid things in the world, one of the most recent is when a Phoenix woman shot and killed her husband in their living room then smoked cigarette while he laid dying.

A few months ago Rebekah Mellon pleaded guilty to second degree murder and is set to be sentenced. The thirty-six year old woman is facing 18 to 22 years in prison after accepting a plea deal from prosecutors.

By taking the plea deal Rebekah will be avoiding a lengthy trial on a first degree murder charge that would probably have resulted in a life sentence for the 2012 killing. The killing was actually captured by surveillance cameras in the home.

According to reports a trial would have showed that there were several incidents that proved that they had a volatile marriage. Court documents say argue that Rebekah was acting in self defense against Donald Mellon. Apparently previous acts of domestic violence made her often fear for her life.

Mellon pleaded guilty to second-degree murder.

Several Phoenix Shooting Incidents

Man Shoots Policeman in Arizona

According to Sgt. Richard Guinn who is with the Apache County Sheriff’s Office, A man had been accused of shooting a woman and a police officer has now died after he had been shot after the police on Saturday afternoon.

According to the report, the whole incident began when the suspect had reportedly fired a gun from the cab of a red pickup truck. This was as he was driving by the LDS Stake Center which is in Eagar.

There were several police departments quick to respond to the scene, including: The Eagar Police Department, Springerville Police Department, Apache County Sheriff’s Office, Arizona Department of Public Saftey, Arizona Game and Fish department, as well as the U. S. Forest Service.

The suspect is, forty year old, Eric Robinson who is from Eagar. They say he fired at the officers which led to him hitting one of the officers from the Eagar Police Department.

Some of the other officers who were at the scene, pursued the suspect as he fled from the scene. Officers say that Mr. Robinson had drove to his house where he then ran inside. The officers then quickly set up a perimeter and tried to get the nearby residents out and away from the scene safely.

According to the reports, the suspect then began to fire at the police from the inside of his home. As the suspect ran out of his home and towards one of the deputies, the officers from the Eagar Police Department as well as deputies form the Apache County Sheriff’s Office then shot him.

The suspect had to be taken to the White Mountain Regional Medical Center where he later died from his wounds.

According to Sgt. Guinn, the Eagar police who was shot is in “good condition”. The officer was treated for his wounds and later released from the hospital.

The woman who had been shot, was shot in the shoulder. She was taken to Summit Regional Medical Center. They are not releasing information about her condition at this time.

Shooting At A Public Place

Tragedy has struck at an unlikely place. Imagine sitting and watching a movie in a packed theatre and then a gunman just stands up after about twenty minutes into the showing of “Trainwreck” which is ironically a comedy movie, and then began to fire at everyone in the theater. Sadly, that isn’t hard to imagine because it happened just a few days ago.

Police have said that the gunman had initially tried to escape on Thursday night by trying to blend into the fleeing, scared crowed. However, he turned back when he saw the police heading inside from the parking lot. Officers then began to start following after him back into the theater. They heard a single gunshot and found him dead inside of the theater.

While police haven’t released his name, they described the gunman as a fifty-eight year old man. He did have a criminal history as well. The gunman was by himself when he started the rampage by shooting two of the people who were unluckily sitting in front of him.

One of the Witnesses Described the Shooting

We heard a loud pop we thought was a firecracker. He wasn’t saying anything. I didn’t hear anybody screaming either.

She also added that she had heard around six gunshots before she and her fiance were able to run to the nearest exit.

Gov. Bobby Jindal traveled to the scene not long after everything happened. He was quick to tell the reporters about the heroic attempts that some people showed. Like one teacher jumped in front of a second teacher to save that teachers life. The second teacher reacted quickly by pulling a fire alarm to warn the other moviegoers.

Jindal’s Quote About the Teachers

Her friend literally jumped over her and, by her account, actually saved her life

President Barack Obama was busy visiting his family to make an appearance to thank those heroes or console the wounded.

According to the news reports, there were at least 100 people inside of that theater that could have been hurt or killed.

Reports say that on Friday, law enforcement personnel went to a Motel 6 to see search the room where the gunman might have been staying.

Police wanted to stay calm and smart about the attack. They kept the gunman’s name out of the public so that they could search and make sure that this wasn’t a terrorist attack form another country or something like that. They wanted to safely track down any friends or family that the suspect might have.

Edmonson’s Statement:

We have no reason to believe that this individual acted beyond this location here.

According to Edmonson, the police had saw something “suspicious” on the inside of the gunman’s car. There was a bomb-sniffing dog at the scene and made a “hit” on three different locations in the vehicle. So, police was being cautious on every aspect of this investigation.  Luckily there were no explosives or bombs found in the car or the theater complex.

The nation has tried to show support to these victims. Amy Schumer, who is the star in “Trainwreck” took to her verified twitter to give her condolences.

Schumer’s Tweet:

My heart is broken and all my thoughts and prayers are with everyone in Louisiana.

Governor Jindal’s Statement about the Shooting:

What we can do now is we can pray. We can hug these families. We can shower them with love, thoughts and prayers.

There are several different types of “shootings” however, of the time all shootings end up with someone getting injured or worse.
