Man Gets Injured As Police Attempt to Arrest Him
On Saturday May 3,2014 a man was injured as he was fleeing from officers near the Children’s Hospital on 20th street and Thomas Road.
Sgt. Steve Martos says that they had received a trespassing call at the Phoenix Police station around 3 in the morning. The caller said that the individual had a bottle in hand and was swearing at the security trying to provoke them. He was holding the bottle in a “threatening manner”.
The security officers had asked the subject to leave three times but each time he kept coming back to the property. The officers arrived to the scene and the man fled. He was chased by the police officers to the area of 20th and Virginia streets.
Sgt. Martos said that the subject then bent to the ground and made a movement towards his pants. As the man began to stand up one of the officers show the suspect in the leg for their safety. As the man stood up after he was shot, the man began to throw rocks at the officers. He then ran away again.
Some later Officers that arrived to the scene found the man near Yale and 17th Street. He did not go easily, he resisted the new officers as well. The fight required more officers to respond to the scene. Luckily the Officers got control of the situation and took the man into custody.
He was first transported to the local hospital for his gunshot wound. Sgt. Martos said that the officers that received minor injuries during the struggle did not require treatment. Sgt. Martos said that when the man was well enough to be released from the hospital, he was booked into jail.
